When the lights flicker or the wiring goes kaput, most of us dial up an electrician, right? Not, if you have a grandpa like Lolo Franklin Morla on the speed dial!
This 65-year-old legend just leveled up his skills, and now he’s the go-to guy for anything electrical at home.
Lolo Franklin recently joined the squad of 20 scholars who completed a course in electrical installation and maintenance, courtesy of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-Luciano Millan Memorial School of Arts and Trades in Asingan, Pangasinan.
“Kaya ko kinuha itong kurso na electrical kasi gusto ko pang ma-explore yung knowledge ko sa construction especially sa electrical,” said Lolo Franklin.
“Saka kung meron problema sa bahay, mga switches, ilaw at saka mga installation ng kuryente pwede ko na gawin, hindi na ako kukuha ng electrician ako na mismo gagawa.”
As a sweet bonus for acing his course, Lolo Franklin got his hands on a cool Php30,000-worth tool kit to help jumpstart his ventures as a newly minted electrician. The kit includes an electric drill, clamp, heat gun, PVC pipe cutter, and a grinder.
With the tool kit, distributed by the Department of Labor and Employment’s Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program, Lolo Franklin is all set to take on contracts and engage in house constructions that can let him earn between Php10,000 to Php20,000.
“After the training, we provide them with the starter kit for their livelihood. Because that’s the purpose of our assistance—employment is our goal. So through this, they are trained and can be employed locally or even overseas. That’s the beauty of it,” said DOLE Region 1 Assistant Regional Director Honorina Baga.
As for Lolo Franklin, he is also just happy to show the world that knowledge isn’t limited by age.
“Grateful ako kasi nakuha ko itong kurso na ito kasi additional talent sa akin kahit na matanda na ako yung knowledge naman hind isa edad,” he proudly said.
