You might have strolled through your local grocery store, picked up lemons, and assumed they’re all the same. Well, not all lemons are created equal.
Rural Rising, a dedicated local volunteer organization seeking to help connect local farmers with sure markets for their harvest, has recently shared a little secret with Pinoy buyers.
Homegrown lemons, which flaunt a natural green hue and a more generous size, are actually better than their regular-sized counterparts. They’re grown without the assistance of chemicals to alter their color. Unfortunately, most of these local gems end up being shunned by traders simply because they don’t conform to the appearance of imported lemons.
Tondough, a local pastry shop, isn’t deterred by looks. They proudly source their ingredients from these “rescue lemons” and attest that these babies are perfect for whipping up their delectable lemon velvet cakes.
Rural Rising has taken it upon themselves to support lemon farmers in Tuba, Benguet by rescuing two tons (roughly 1,814 kg) of lemons that would’ve otherwise been left out in the cold due to their size and color.
Offering an irresistible deal at Php39 per kilo or P199 for five kilos, the group has opened the doors for orders from anyone looking to lend their support.
