During the pandemic, community pantries became a lifeline for many Filipinos. Now, even with things back to normal, one public school teacher in Iligan City found a way to bring that spirit of generosity into her classroom.
Melanie Figueroa, a teacher at Hinaplanon National High School, turned her advisory classroom into a mini pantry stocked with free school supplies for her students.
From pencils and crayons to papers, staplers, and even envelopes, her “classroom pantry” is filled with items that Grade 10 students can freely use whenever they need them.
In a Facebook post, Teacher Melanie shared that most of the items were donated by friends from abroad who sent balikbayan boxes filled with school essentials.
She said it’s her little way of supporting her students and their parents.
“My way of supporting the learners in my section and to lessen the expenses of parents,” she said.
