Veteran journalist Korina Sanchez took to social media to share the inspiring rescue journey of Chika, a Chow Chow, once left for dead in a no-kill shelter in Mandaluyong City.
Sanchez recalled first seeing Chika bloodied and being bullied by other dogs in the shelter. “I had to take her,” she said.
According to the journalist, the dog had been abandoned by a breeder after being born without a palate—an apparent death sentence for a young pup.
Determined to help, Sanchez turned to veterinarian Doc Nielsen Donato of the Veterinary Institute of the Philippines (VIP), who consulted with a Japanese specialist to create an artificial palate for Chika. Following the successful procedure, Chika transformed into a healthy, beautiful dog.
Now four years into her new life, Chika has found a permanent and loving home. Her adoptive family recently celebrated her birthday—an occasion that Sanchez says is proof of the power of love and second chances.
“You never know what happy endings await these poor helpless street dogs and cats. They can’t say thanks or vote for you. That’s what makes it so special. What love can do,” said Sanchez, a known advocate for animal welfare, continues to encourage pet adoption and rescue.
