Local coconut-based alcoholic drink Lambanog has gained global recognition as the second-best spirit worldwide, according to TasteAtlas, an online food database.
The popular Pinoy spirit ranked No. 2 on the “Top 79 Spirits in the World” list with its 4.4-star rating out of 5, putting it in close competition with Speyside Scotch from Scotland, which claimed the top spot.
Lambanog is renowned for its clear, colorless, and strong character, crafted by fermenting coconut palm sap to about 40% alcohol by volume (ABV). While modern versions may have added flavors and sweetness, the classic lambanog is traditionally enjoyed either neat or as a base for cocktails.
The top rankings also featured a diverse mix of global spirits such as Islay scotch from Scotland, Viljamovka from Serbia, and armagnac from France. Additionally, familiar spirits like Japanese whisky, London dry gin from England, cognac from France, and soju from South Korea were highlighted, showcasing the wide array of spirits enjoyed around the world.
