Surigao City’s cool new trade: Trash for treats!

The Surigao City government has launched a green initiative that allows residents to swap plastic waste with a pack of goodies.

Surigao City is turning waste into sustenance with its new eco-friendly initiative, “Imo Basura, Pulihan nan Ayuda.”

Under this new program, residents can swap 25 kilograms of plastic waste for five kilos of rice, three canned goods, and three noodle packs. Accepted items include plastic cellophane, bottles, tin cans, and cartons.

To claim their goodies, residents must weigh in at their respective barangay halls, according to the city public information office in a Philippine News Agency report.

Schedules will also be posted for convenient drop-off times, it added.

The program is under the local government’s initiative, Mabilis at Pantay na Distribusyon ng Ayuda Kapalit ng Plastik na Basura, at Iba Pa.
