It’s a Studio Ghibli weekend for Pinoy fans!
Studio Ghibli, The Japan Foundation Manila, and the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation—in partnership with Shangri-La Plaza and Fully Booked—are bringing a slice of anime magic to Manila with a mini film festival featuring six of its Studio Ghibli’s beloved classics to be screened for free.
On November 16 and 17, the Shangri-La Plaza Red Carpet Cinema will be showing “Spirited Away” (2001), “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988), “Howl’s Moving Castle” (2004), “Ponyo” (2008), “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” (1984), and “Castle in the Sky” (1986), in celebration of Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary director and one of the 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees.
Admission is free but grab those tickets early on the Japan Foundation Manila website starting November 4 because it’s on a first-come, first-served basis.
According to Japan Foundation Manila, the Studio Ghibli Weekend is a rare treat for Filipino fans to see these masterpieces on the big screen. “This truly will be an unforgettable experience for children and families to dive into the fantastic and colorful world of Hayao Miyazaki,” it said.
Often dubbed the “Walk Disney of Japan,” Miyazaki is one of the five recipients of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Awards. He is recognized for his dedication to creating stories that speak respectfully to children, one of the most demanding audiences.
He is celebrated for using his art to explore issues like environmental protection, peace, and the role and rights of women in society always with the depth and respect they deserve.
