In a world where stray cats often face neglect and harm, TV5 broadcaster Laila Chikadora is championing a cause close to every cat lover’s heart as a tribute to the station’s stray-turned-resident cat, Guardfield, who crossed the rainbow bridge early this week.
“Be kind to strays. Give them a chance and they will blossom into a beautiful chonk of happiness that gives back unconditional love,” Laila said passionately in a Facebook post.
She also emphasized that every cat, regardless of their background, deserves love and care as much as their purebred counterparts.
To illustrate her point, Laila shared the heartwarming story of Guardfield, whose name was a play on the name of the popular comic strip character Garfield and the word “guard” as he became a constant companion of the station’s security personnel during the pandemic.
Locked inside the station to minimize infection, employees found comfort and mental health support in this unlikely feline companion.
“Cats don’t have 9 lives. But sometimes, God gives them an extension to life so that they could touch and warm ours,” added Laila, sharing the poignant message just a day after TV5 bid farewell to their beloved cat who died “due to unexpected reasons and complications.”

Guardfield crossed the rainbow bridge last December 10 while in the care of veterinarians of Biyaya Animal Care in Mandaluyong City.
