More than winning matches through their spikes, blocks, and attacks, the Philippine men’s volleyball team will be out to advance the sport in the country when it hosts the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
In an interview with One Sports, National University setter Owa Retamar said he believes that there is more on the line as the Philippine team will be looking to gain more fans for the men’s volleyball team like those of their women counterparts.
“Nakaka-excite po na makikita ang pagmamahal at suporta nila sa men’s international teams. Susubukan po naming Pinoy players na maging karapat dapat din sa puso ninyo,” said Owa.
He also said they are hoping to provide inspiration and encourage more Filipino spikers to pursue a career in volleyball.
“Napakalaki na factor ito sa lahat ng volleyball players, lalo na sa mga kabataan na gusto din maglaro. Syempre yung mga idol nila napapanood lang nila sa TV or Youtube, ngayon pwede nila makita ng personal,” said Owa.
And on a personal level, Owa said he is hoping to be one of the players who will hold such responsibilities to push for a better future for Philippine volleyball.
“Sobrang saya kasi nainvite ulit ako na magtryout para sa national team tapos ito yung preparation namin. Paghahandaan ko po talaga para mapasok ako sa line up,” said Owa.
Owa helped the Philippine team clinch the silver medal during the 30th SEA Games held in the country in 2019.
The Philippines is set to host the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2025 scheduled on September 12 to 28 next year.
