Pinoy students develop AI tech to catch heart disease before it’s too late!

A team of Grade 11 students from Quezon City Science High School created an AI software that detects heart disease with 98% accuracy.

A group of innovative Grade 11 students from Quezon City Science High School has developed an AI-powered software that can diagnose heart disease before it becomes life-threatening.

Called “Pintig” (which means “heartbeat” in Filipino), the software uses machine learning algorithms to analyze CT scan images and detect plaque buildup in the heart or fatty deposits in the heart that could lead to clogged arteries.

This invention recently won first place in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines category at a regional science and technology fair and was recently featured on GMA’s “24 Oras” under its “Game Changer” segment.

Kenzo Miguel Tayko, one of the developers, explained that heart disease is typically detected only in its later stages, making it challenging to treat it and often requiring invasive procedures, the report quoted him as saying.

On the other hand, “Pintig” offers a non-invasive alternative that can provide a more accurate diagnosis by analyzing images at a microscopic level and identifying tiny details that the human eye may miss.

The software was trained on a vast dataset of 14,000 CT scan images from 200 patients, achieving an impressive 98% accuracy in detecting plaque buildup.

The students are now collaborating with the Philippine Heart Center to conduct clinical trials and finetune the software’s accuracy, ensuring its safety and effectiveness in medical settings, according to the report.
