UK-based Filipino actor Joaquin Pedro Valdes is making his mark in London’s theater scene by stepping into the iconic role of Light Yagami in the theatrical adaptation of the beloved manga, “Death Note.”
The English-language take on this Japanese sensation by Tsugumi Ohba just wrapped up a three-day run at The Palladium in London to the delight of hardcore fans of the series.
In the manga, Light, aka Kira, is a student turned vigilante, wielding the powers of a Shinigami (reaper) through his death note to bring justice to those he deemed as “sinners.” The role is a coveted one because of the intricate layers of heroism and villainy that Light embodies.
His intellectual prowess and arrogance create an intriguing dynamic, particularly in his rivalry with series protagonist L, who is determined to unveil the mysterious killer’s identity.
The London adaptation of “Death Note” took a musical approach, pushing the vocal talents of both Valdes and fellow Asian actor Dean John Wilson. The production has even more in store for fans, as it announced three new shows at West End’s Lyric Theater in September.
Prior to landing the pivotal role of Light, Valdes garnered experience in the theater world with appearances in productions like “Miss Saigon,” “The Lion King,” and “Heathers.”
