From the vibrant streets of Baguio City to capturing hearts in America, Filipina artist Venazir Martinez is making her mark with her first solo art exhibit in the Bay Area.
In an Instagram post, Venazir expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase her artwork at the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in San Francisco, California, with her exhibit dubbed “Hila-bana Espasyo Temporal.”
“I am beyond blessed to be guided by a red thread. Thank you so much @phlinsf, @upaa_sf, and @delendot for giving me a platform to showcase the souls and spaces I’ve encountered throughout my journey,” said Venazir.
In a separate post, the PCG revealed that Venazir’s artworks originated from her thesis at UP Baguio and as a street art project in Baguio City. This groundbreaking exhibit marked both her Bay Area debut and the first exhibition at the Consulate in 2024.
Describing the essence of “Hila-Bana,” a Filipino compound word combining “hila” or to pull and “hilbanahan” or temporary stitching, the PCG stated, “It challenged the public’s visual perception through cultural and ancestral heritage emblems that are unified by a red thread.”
The exhibit ran from January 19 to 30.
