Perfect lead-up! Pinoy pole vaulter EJ Obiena pockets gold in Poland ahead of Paris Olympic bid

World’s No. 2 EJ Obiena is preparing to face off with the world’s best at the Paris Olympics and set a season’s best during the World Athletics Tour in Poland.

Philippine pole vaulter EJ Obiena, currently ranked second in the world, just cleared 5.97m on his first attempt, setting a season-best to win the World Athletics Tour Gold in Poland.

This is a fantastic development in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics for the celebrated Pinoy athlete. EJ also set a stadium record for his POZNAN 2024 performance.

Emmanouil Karalis of Greece secured the silver with a 5.92m vault, while Poland’s Piotr Lisek took bronze at 5.75m. Obiena also attempted 6.02m but did not clear the height.

One June 12, Obiena shared his thoughts about the upcoming Olympics and recalled the moment when he became the first Asian and Filipino to clear 6.0 meters in pole vaulting. He assured Pinoys that he would be bringing his “I can do it” mindset when representing the Philippines in Paris.
