The Philippines, known for its extended Christmas season, takes center stage at the Vatican’s Christmas exhibit with a Filipino-inspired Nativity scene crafted by a Pinoy artist.
In a Facebook post, Bro. Christoffer Denzell Aquino expressed gratitude for the privilege of crafting an entry for the Philippine Embassy to the Holy See for the “100 Cribs” Exhibit at St. Peter’s Square.
“This is our country’s entry for this year’s ‘100 Presepi in Vaticano.’ I am eternally grateful for the support and opportunity given to us by Hon. Myla Macahilig, Ambassador of the PH to the Holy See for the crafting of this Belen,” said Aquino.
“Personally, this is a dream come true for me as for the longest time I wished to participate in this event,” he added.
His masterpiece, titled “Pamilyang Pinagpala,” portrays the Holy Family as a typical Filipino rural family celebrating the gift of life embodied in the child Jesus.
Aquino’s attention to detail includes a focus on St. Joseph serenading his beloved “mag-ina” with a guitar after a day’s work, accompanied by celestial angels rejoicing above.
“It is practically celebration on heaven and earth for the humble coming of the almighty Emmanuel, God who choose to be like us so that we may become like Him,” he related.
“I tried my best to inculturate and translate the concept and the dynamics of the famed Presepe Napoletano into Filipino,” he added.
This marks a significant moment as Aquino follows in the footsteps of fellow Tarlac native Albert Dancel, the first Filipino artist showcased at the exhibit in 2013 when it was held at the Piazza del Popolo.
