No need to get spooked: Hungry Ghost Month, not bad luck but “cosmic” family reunion

Ghost Month is not the time to get spooked. It’s actually an opportunity to pay tribute to departed loved ones.

It’s time to rethink everything we’ve heard about the Ghost Month or the Hungry Ghost Festival because there’s nothing to get spooked about the occasion, which begins on Aug. 16 this year.

Offering a fresh perspective to turn the scare factor on its head, Feng Shui Master Hanz Cua likened the month-long observance to a “cosmic” family reunion that allows families to remember and pay tribute to loved ones who’ve crossed over.

“Hindi ito dapat katakutan pero ito ay isang tradition para maalala rin natin ang mga yumao nating kamag-anak, kaibigan o kakilala,” Cua was quoted by the Manila Bulletin, putting those eerie tales to rest.

During the festival, folks offer food and paper money to the dead. It is believed that the Gates of the Underworld creak open, allowing hungry ghosts to roam around to visit families or search for unsuspecting victims, which leads to the belief that bad luck may come in time with the festival.

But Cua dished some advice to ward off potential negative vibes, suggesting wearing cheerful colors and holding off making major life decisions during the month. And if you’re making a to-do list, put offering prayers right at the top.

So, rather than panic about disasters and whatnot that the month may bring, chill out and focus on the flipside of this unique tradition. Let’s turn those hungry ghosts into happy spirits and take the chance to connect with them and turn Ghost Month into a time of reflection and positivity.
