Cesario Caralipio, a humble fisherman from Navotas City, found happiness in the simplicity of his life, casting his nets into the sea and selling the day’s catch at the bustling fish port.
But fate dealt him a harsh blow on November 14, 2022, when a massive fire razed his community, swallowing over 500 homes, including Cesario’s and his cherished fishing boat.
“Isa kami sa nasunugan sa lugar namin at napinsala nito ang bangkang ginagamit ko. Nanlumo ‘yung kalooban ko noong nasunog ‘yung bangka ko,” said the fisherman.
But rather than succumb to despair, he chose to rise from the ashes and rebuild his livelihood and his family’s future.
He decided to work as a maintenance personnel at the Navotas City Hall by day and cast his nets with a borrowed boat by night, proving that resilience is born from adversity. He also tried his hand at carpentry but this proved too harsh for his aging body.
But his hard work and unwavering spirit caught the eye of destiny. A stroke of luck, courtesy of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), saw Cesario and 29 fellow fishermen awarded early this month a 20-footer fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) boat, complete with underwater fitting and a 7.5 HP marine gasoline engine.
Now, he can go back to his beloved occupation. “Ang pangingisda, hindi na maaalis sa akin… Pinakamasayang araw po namin mag-asawa ngayon,” said Cesario.
