Miss Universe 2022 R’Bonney Gabriel just showed her ultimate love for her Filipino heritage by trying the classic exotic food, balut.
But what makes this food trip that normally sends the bravest human cringe an extraordinary feat is the fact that R’Bonney is a pescatarian, sticking mainly to fish and seafood together with her vegetarian diet. Yet, she couldn’t resist the challenge.
In an Instagram post, she shared her daring adventure to Pateros, the “balut capital” of the Philippines.
“Go to the Philippines and eat balut, they said…,” declared R’Bonney. “Broke my pescatarian ways and traveled to Pateros, the Balut capital in Manila Philippines, to try balut,” she added.
Armed with her brave heart (and palate), the Fil-Am beauty queen slurped the balut juice and dug into the fertilized duck egg, sprinkling it with a bit of salt and vinegar.
Her verdict? “It was not that bad. If I have to rate it, like a six and a half for me. Definitely not something I’ll be eating every day,” she shared.
Balut is a fertilized developing duck egg embryo that’s boiled or steamed and eaten straight from the shell. It’s a famed Philippine delicacy and a must-try for adventurous tourists.
