Filipino scientists are taking bone tissue repair to the future with a combo of artificial intelligence and 3D printing technology.
In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) has teamed up with Dr. Erwin Enriquez of the Ateneo de Manila University and the Vellore Institute of Technology of India to provide accessible and affordable solutions for bone-related challenges caused by aging, infections, and accidents.
“By integrating transformative technologies, like AI and 3D printing, we are charting a course towards a future, where healthcare is revolutionized, and innovative approaches become the cornerstone of medical advancements,” said PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jaime Montoya in a statement.
This project introduces a game-changing alternative to existing methods, enhancing performance for complex bone regeneration. How? 3D printing technology is used to craft bone scaffolds with tunable shapes. Montoya also revealed that the project led to the development of a machine-learning model analyzing factors affecting the effectiveness of bioceramic precursor materials in printing. Simultaneously, the team explored polymer-nano clay materials and 3D-printed frameworks, ensuring strength and compatibility with the human body. “This collaborative initiative, showcasing the dedication and expertise of our team, holds promise in providing accessible and affordable solutions for bone-related challenges,” he said. “Once successful, this initiative may empower surgeons with a diverse selection of composite materials, custom-tailored to meet the medical and financial needs of individual patients,” added Montoya.
