At 29, Robelyn Molina Javar has become an inspiration to many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), proving that domestic helpers can break barriers and land higher-paying jobs in Hong Kong.
After losing her job for the second time as a domestic helper in August, Robelyn was ready to pack her bags and return home. But fate had other plans.
Through Hong Kong’s new Expanded Supplementary Labor Scheme (ESLS), she landed an unexpected offer as a receptionist, complete with a salary of HK$14,500 a month, overtime pay, and free lodging.
“From being a domestic helper sabi ko imposible na magkaroon ng ganito. Feeling ko noon mataas ang ang expectations nila sa work na ibibigay ko sa kanila,” Robelyn shared with The Sun Hong Kong.
Robelyn admitted that she wasn’t confident about her qualifications she didn’t finish her hotel and restaurant management degree at Panpacific University in Pangasinan. Yet, within two weeks of applying, her visa was approved.
“Wala po ako talagang masyadong college credential kaya di po ako nag expect na ma-approve noon ang visa ko para sa ganitong trabaho,” said the mother of two.
Now, as she adjusts to her new office job, Robelyn is encouraging her fellow OFWs to aim for better opportunities under the ESLS, which guarantees fair pay and proper work conditions under a two-year contract.
“Maraming mga Pinoy ang deserve ang mas magandang trabaho,” she said, crediting the program for offering a fresh start for those who didn’t finish college.
Hong Kong’s ESLS initiative ensures foreign workers are treated equally, earning salaries comparable to locals while enjoying free accommodation. For Robelyn, it’s a dream come true and proof that hard work and perseverance can open unexpected doors.
“Glory to God talaga na merong ganitong program ang Hong Kong para sa mga hindi naman nakatapos at hindi hinihingan ng maraming requirements,” she said.
