Lakas! Three Pinays bag Pulitzer nods

Filipina power was in full force after the announcement of nominations for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize.

Two Filipinas and a Filipino-American journalist were named finalists in the 2024 Pulitzer Prize, a prestigious recognition for journalists in the United States.

Hannah Reyes Morales, a photographer, was recognized for her work in the New York Times story “How the Youth Boom in Africa Will Change the World,” capturing the ‘youthquake’ in Africa. She has previously received accolades such as the 2023 Pictures of the Year International Award and a 2023 World Press Photo Award, reported Rappler.

Nicole Dungca, an investigative journalist, was a finalist for her contributions to the story “Searching for Maura” in The Washington Post, exploring a historical injustice at the 1904 World’s Fair. Ren Galeno, a visual artist, was also part of the finalist team for “Searching for Maura.”

The recognition further cements the stellar achievements of Filipino journalists on the global stage, including Pulitzer winners like Manny Mogato in 2018 and Carlos P. Romulo in 1942, as well as Filipino-American winners such as Byron Acohido, Alex Tizon, Cheryl Diaz Meyer, and Jose Antonio Vargas.

Photographer Ezra Acayan was a 2021 finalist, and Romeo Gacad received multiple nominations before his passing in 2021.
