For 14 years the dance crew Legit Status has been chasing their big break, dreaming of one day winning the coveted top spot at the Hip Hop International (HHI). But the gold medals and championship trophies have been elusive—until now.
The group, composed of 40 dancer members, has been a fixture at the world-renowned dance competition since 2009, said 19-year-old Alexis Nickole Enciso, a third-year college student taking up Industrial Engineering at the De La Salle University in an interview with Balitang Bright Side.
Although they secured podium places in previous years, like their third-place wins in the Megacrew Division in 2017 and 2019, it wasn’t until this year that they strongly commanded the world hip-hop stage.
Clinching the World Champion trophy in the Megacrew Division, each dancer walked away with a gold medal, marking a defining moment that cemented Legit Status as a true dance force. This much-awaited feat on Aug. 6 came after an intense 11-month training regimen.
While their hard-earned gold medals served as a testament to their rigorous training, Alexis revealed, “The title of being world champions in the biggest hip hop dance event in the world was the biggest prize for sure.”
Winning the HHI competition was “absolutely crazy,” she said. “Never in my life did I expect myself to get to this point because the thought of it always felt so surreal. Most especially because of the fact that after 11 months of training and hard work, 14 years of Legit attempting to win that Gold, it finally paid off.”
“I think our piece truly was special over the other teams because of the mastery we had with all the styles we showcased. Aside from hip hop, we had other dance styles in the piece like waacking, locking, dancehall, and breaking,” she added.
But the journey to the top wasn’t a simple walk in the park for the Legit Status members. They had to put in long hours of practice to perfect their dance routine, and at the same time fulfill their various obligations at home, at work, or at school.
“It is definitely a challenge but time management is really the key to balancing everything on my plate,” she said.
