Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward has granted honorary citizenship to Godzilla, the iconic movie monster, recognizing his role in promoting the city’s entertainment culture and tourism.
According to an IMDB report, Godzilla’s official address is listed as 1-19-1 Kabuki-cho, Shinjuku-ku, with a “date of birth” of April 9, 1954. This is the same year that the first Godzilla film was released. The special reason for his residency is “promoting the entertainment of and watching over the Kabuki-cho neighbourhood and drawing visitors from around the globe.”
The city noted that Godzilla has “visited” Shinjuku three times in films: Godzilla (1984), Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), and Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999).
To commemorate the event, the Shinjuku City Office distributed 3,000 copies of Godzilla’s residency certificate to fans on Saturday, celebrating the beloved reptilian icon’s new status as a symbolic guardian of Tokyo’s bustling entertainment district.
