Get ready to celebrate girl power like never before! The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is making history by launching the inaugural All-Women Sports Awards on March 20 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, just in time for International Women’s Month.
In a press forum, PSC Commissioner Bong Coo unveiled plans for this groundbreaking event, marking the first time female athletes will be exclusively honored.
“I have been an athlete for so many years, pero wala pang ganitong klase ng awards kaya naisip namin ito na exclusive for women lang,” said Coo. “Kasi di ba its always sports award in general, kaya sabi ko nga it’s about time,” she added.
The awards ceremony, envisioned to become an annual tradition, aims to spotlight not only recent triumphs but also past accomplishments of extraordinary athletes.
“We prioritized yung 2023 performances ng ating mga atleta. But we do not negate yung perfomances nila the past years, although we did give more weight to their 2023 performances,” the multi-awarded bowler said.
So far, she said a total of 300 nominees have been submitted to the committee by their respective National Sports Associations (NSAS). Out of these nominees, 136 exceptional athletes, coaches, and executives have already been selected as winners across categories like Athlete of the Year, Flame Awards, and Lifetime Achievement Awards.
To make this event extra special, instead of traditional plaques and trophies, winners will receive specially-crafted rings, adding a unique touch to their well-deserved recognition. Plus, Senator Pia Cayetano will be awarding Php100,000 to the Athlete of the Year.
