Filipino-American twins, Carolyn and Rosalyn have stepped into the spotlight in the world of science and self-discovery through their recent feature in Netflix’s captivating documentary, “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment.”
In this thought-provoking docuseries, Carolyn and Rosalyn join a group of identical twins on an eight-week scientific experiment to explore the profound impact of diet and lifestyle choices on both the body and identity.
Speaking with Kollective Hustle, the twins, who were born in the Philippines and immigrated to the US when they were two years old, revealed their driving force behind participating in the project: a mission to elevate the representation of Filipino individuals in scientific research.
“Based on general statistics, there is an underrepresentation of Asians and Filipinos, specifically, in scientific research. We want to encourage even more participation not just from Filipinos, who are twins, but from Filipinos in general,” Carolyn said.
Carolyn Sideco is a sports consultant and a guiding light in spiritual and relationship coaching across the San Francisco Bay Area. Meanwhile, Rosalyn Moorhouse shares her wisdom as a high school religious studies teacher at a local Catholic school.
But despite their years in the US, Carolyn and Rosalyn’s hears remain tied to their Filipino roots.
“My purpose is to be Filipino 24/7. If I could do anything I wanted all day long and not have to worry about money, then I would just want to be Filipino 24/7,” said Carolyn.
Rosalyn echoed her sister’s sentiments, stressing the importance of acknowledging the complexities of Filipino culture.
“It means an acknowledgment of my roots, to pay homage to my roots, but also to do the hard work of reconciling what it means to be Filipino. Maybe not everything about being Filipino is all that great, as there may be some practices that we need to reconcile. We must at least acknowledge that there are some good and not so good. Certainly, we should not ever deny it,” said Rosalyn.
