Elijah Canlas proud to be part of ‘Sunshine,’ a female-driven indie film

Elijah Canlas hopes that the success of "Sunshine" in the international film circuit will resonate with moviegoers in the Philippines.

After winning a Crystal Bear award at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, actor Elijah Canlas is hoping that Filipinos will also get to watch the indie film, “Sunshine,” starring Maris Racal in the titular role.

Canlas, who co-stars with Racal, said that he is proud to be part of a film that showcases female-driven storytelling.

“Bilang isang lalaki, bilang isang artista na magiging parte lang ng pelikulang ganun. Nagkwekwento ng ganun, malaking bagay na siya sa akin and I’m just grateful,” he said in an interview with ABS-CBN.

“Kaya sumama talaga ako sa Berlin kasi gusto ko talaga siya mapanood and also Berlinale is a dream festival to attend. The fact na nakapasa siya dun and more nanalo pa ng Crystal Bear, excited ako mapanood ng mga tao dito sa Pilipinas yung Sunshine,” he added.

“Sunshine” follows a young gymnast, played by Racal, who discovers she is pregnant just before national team tryouts.

For now, “Sunshine” is making rounds in international film festivals, and Elijah hoped it will generate enough buzz to secure a local release

“Sana magkaroon ng traction enough hype to screen here. Matapang yung pelikula and yung kwento na tinatackle niya. Sana mabigyan kami ng tamang platform and tamang mga distributors na magtiwala sa pelikula,” he said.
