Laura Baginski and Suzy Lee, two friends from Chicago, have turned a personal need into a nationwide hit with the Early Birds Club, a dance party designed for women who still need to be up early for their daily responsibilities.
In an interview with The Evening News, the friends said that the idea came from their love of dancing which started in the 90s. As they navigated work, motherhood, and Suzy’s cancer diagnosis, they decided to host an early evening dance party for middle-aged women, starting and ending early enough to accommodate their busy lives.
The first event, held last February in Chicago, sold out quickly, drawing hundreds of attendees for a night of fun that wrapped up by 10 p.m. Due to overwhelming demand, the duo has since hosted dozens of sold-out events across Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York, with tickets selling out online in minutes.
The Early Birds Club welcomes women, as well as trans and non-binary individuals, providing a safe, inclusive space to dance freely. Suzy’s cousin serves as DJ, spinning hits from Britney Spears, Depeche Mode, and Salt-N-Pepa, while attendees enjoy the club’s signature drink, the “Hot Flash.”
“It’s therapy. You’re singing at the top of your lungs and having fun with friends,” said Suzy.
