Chapell Roan didn’t just take home the Grammy for Best New Artist—she also dropped some hard truths about how the music industry treats its artists.
During her speech, the singer shared her experience when she got signed as a young artist and called on record labels to actually care for and support the talents they profit from.
“I got signed as a minor and when I got dropped, I got zero job experience under my belt and just like most people I had a difficult job finding a job,” she said.
She demanded that artists deserve the same protections as regular employees: “I would that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a [livable] wage and health care especially to developing artists…”
Then came the mic-drop moment: “Record labels should treat their artists as valuable employees with a liveable wage and health insurance and protection…labels, we got you, but do you got us?”
