Coach Pop’s Ultimate Wisdom: Relationships trump wins and losses in sports and life

In the world of sports where wins and losses, Xs and Os are the name of the game, there’s a life lesson from none other than the newly-inducted Basketball Hall of Famer, Gregg Popovich: it’s all about who you’re vibing off the court.

And this, according to Pop, as he is fondly called, is true for ballers and everyone.

“The wins and losses are all crap. The highs and lows are all crap… It doesn’t really exist. What exists is seeing these guys and their kids, those relationships with your assistant coaches, colleagues, and friends. Because that is what you take with you as you move along,” said Popovich at his induction.

“All those wins and losses fade away. But those relationships stick with you forever, and that is where the self-esteem and self-satisfaction come,” he furthered.

He also threw some more curveballs: that relationships beat trophies in a day and huge paychecks and shiny achievements might fade away, but the memories of shared moments with others last forever.

“The times that we live in require that we relate with each other a whole lot better than we do right now,” said the winningest coach in NBA history.

Coach Pop’s words ring true as he took his rightful spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the prestigious Class of 2023. The ceremony was held on August 13 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Not just lip service

But for those who know him by heart, his words of wisdom were not lip service just for the occasion.

Class of 2023 member, Tony Parker, who spent 17 out his 18-year NBA career playing under Popovich, attested to this. “You’ve always been a second dad to me. Everything you did for me and my family, I appreciate everything. Thank you, Pop. I love you,” said Parker in his own speech.
