On social media, the phrase “bai na bai” has taken on a negative, often insulting tone, causing drama and fueling cancel culture. But basketball superstar June Mar Fajardo has a fresh, positive take on this emerging phrase that references the Bisaya community.
In a Facebook post from the San Miguel Beermen, June Mar encouraged his fellow Bisaya not to take offense when they hear the term.
“Sa mga kapwa ko bisaya, lagi lang natin gawin best natin, lahat tayo may pangarap, wag tayo maghhate sa iba,” he said. “Hindi dapat ma-offend basta alam mo sa sarili mo na wala ka namang tinatapakang tao.”
The Kraken also reminded everyone to embrace the true meaning of “bai” in the Bisaya dialect, which means “friend.”
“lyun talaga ang tawag sakin, kasi sa amin, kaibigan ang ibig sabihin nun,” June Mar explained.
And with eight MVP awards and 10 PBA championships under his belt, June Mar’s not just been called “bai,” he has owned it!
