Action star turned senator Lito Lapid’s message to OSY: Dream big and never give up!

Action star and Senator Lito Lapid says he only wants to inspire the next generation to go for their dreams despite being out of school.

For the older crowd, he’s the legendary “Leon Guerrero,” a former stuntman who conquered the silver screen. But for Gen Zs, he’s “Pinuno” and “Supremo” from the TV series “Ang Probinsyano” and “Batang Quiapo,” respectively.

Beyond the screen, he’s Senator Lito Lapid, a three-term member of the Senate quietly fulfilling his duties as a legislator.

He also owns a sprawling estate in his hometown Pampanga, complete with rice fields, a shooting range, a swimming pool, poultry, and a mission fit for a kingpin.

Lapid’s rise to fame and power may seem unlikely, given his humble beginnings and the fact that he couldn’t finish his studies due to poverty.

But in an interview with broadcaster Bernadette Sembrano on her vlog, he humbly dismissed his personal and career milestones as well as his properties as bragging rights, saying they were meant to inspire others.

“Sana maging inspirasyon ako. Kahit hindi nakapag-aral, isang stuntman, extra, anak ng labandera, na naabot ko itong ganito,” said Lito. “Huwag silang matakot. Kasi ako puro takot ako e, wala ako tiwala sa sarili ko. Isang aral ito na kahit di ka nakapag-aral,” he added.

Reflecting on his childhood struggles, Lapid recalled how his family’s poverty forced him to stop schooling and pitch in to help the family make ends meet. From farming to shepherding to selling bread, he did it all.

Eventually, he found his way into showbiz, starting as an extra and then a stuntman, before becoming a real action star. His celebrity status paved the way for a successful foray into politics.

His visibility during the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption, where he actively helped those in need, further propelled his political career: he was elected vice governor and governor of Pampanga, and years later, earned a seat in the Senate.

For the actor-turned-politician, all it takes to find success in life is to have determination, resilience, hard work, and a bit of luck.

“Wala namang taong di nangarap e. Yung pangarap natin kunin mo dahil sandali lang naman tayo sa buhay,” said Lapid.
