Kinilala ng British government ang dalawang Pinoy scientists mula sa University of the Philippines dahil sa kanilang kontribusyon sa pananaliksik at pag-unlad ng Pilipinas.
Kasama sina Pamela Louise Tolentino ng UP Diliman College of Science National Institute of Geological Sciences (UPD-CS NIGS) at college dean Giovanni Tapang ang binigyan pansin ng United Kingdom sa isinagawang decadal recap ng kanilang scientific achievements kasama ang Pilipinas, ayon sa UP College of Science.
Isa sa mga lead investigators si Tolentino sa kanilang proyekto na ini-examine kung saan umaagos ang tubig sa ilog at paano ito nagbabago ng mga landscape. Mayroong evidence-based solutions para sa epektibong flood risk assessment at planning ang grupo nila Tolentino sa ilalim ng “Understanding the Impacts of Hydrometeorological Hazards in Southeast Asia Programme” na pinondohan ng Newton Agham Fund.
Noong 2016, inilunsad ang Newton Agham Fund upang mabigyan ng £3 million o Php180 million na pondo para sa mga key research projects sa health at life sciences, environmental resilience, at energy security.
“I honestly believe that more than the outputs such as methods and data developed from the project, it is truly the conversations where the common goal of providing a better future for everyone that will drive the changes,” ayon kay Tolentino.
Hindi rin matatawaran ang galing ni Tapang na isang Fellow ng Leaders in Innovation. Noong nakaraang taon, pinangunahan niya ang commercialization ng Versatile Instrumentation System for Science Education and Research (VISSER), isang portable learning device na kung saan pwedeng gumawa ang mga estudyante ng 120 experiments sa chemistry, biology, environmental science, at physics. “At the end of the year, the company distributed 43 VISSER units and generated Pho 3.4 million in total revenue,” ayon sa UP College of Science.
